Paper Assignment 1 Prompt 1 Homer’s Odyssey is one of the many epic of the classical era to give an detailed overlook on the relationship between humans and gods. Odyssey is not just an adventure story about a king struggling to get back home after having gone to war; nor is it one about a son searching for his father after rumors say that he has been dead for many years. The events that take place in Homer’s Odyssey are heavily influenced by the Greek Gods. One can see how the gods interaction with humans affects what it means to be human through the perspectives and experiences of the mortal main characters such as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, and Telemachus, the son of the king. Throughout the story of the Odyssey, the Greek Gods interfere with the affairs of the mortal humans, especially those of Odysseus and his son Telemachus. One of these gods is Athena who is the goddess of wisdom. Athena is one the gods who helps Telemachus and Odysseus. In ancient Greek Mytho logy, gods and goddesses tend to favor humans who demonstrate qualities similar to their own. For example, Athena favors Odysseus because Odysseus, like Athena, is renowned for his cunning and his cleverness among both humans and gods. Even Zeus, the leader of all the gods of Greece, admires Odysseus’ intelligence: â€Å"How could I [Zeus] forget Godlike Odysseus? No other mortal has a mind like his† (Homer 3).
